Taking place at in the Drama Room at the WPCC, Smokescreen brings Dubbo residents the opportunity to witness iconic and influential films from the history of cinema.

The theme for 2025 'The Unexpected'.

Each film takes a familiar characterisation, scene or trope from the science fiction universe and diverts expectations. From ground-breaking new ideas in portraying space and time, to film settings and cinematography that redefined how audiences experienced a genre that is often only thought of as ‘those Star films’.

Tickets $10 or purchase a Season Pass and see all 11 films for $75. Tickets includes a 'Buy one, get one free' offer following the film at The Establishment Bar.

Gattaca (1997)

Gattaca is a 1997 dystopian science fiction film starring Jude Law, Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman which presents a future society driven by genetic selection. Writer and director Andrew Niccol’s film centres on Vincent Freeman, born an ‘invalid’ he dreams of going to space. His dreams are threatened when a murder occurs before his launch into space. Now he must avoid being discovered despite intense police scrutiny and his progressing relationship with ‘valid’ Irene Cassini (Thurman), while discovering who the real killer is.
