Smokescreen | Umrao Jaan Saturday 6 April | 4pm Directed by Muzaffar Ali (145 min) Umrao Jaan (1981, G). In 1899 Mirza Hadi Ruswa published what is regarded as the first novel in Urdu. This 1981 adaptation by Muzaffar Ali follows the life of Umar Jaan, a young girl kidnapped and sold to a brothel in Lucknow (India) where she is trained to be a courtesan. Fates forces her to return to her village where her family must deal with her past. A more austere Bollywood film than today’s kaleidoscope excesses but it still brims with colour, energy and passion.
