From humble beginnings operating as a part-time business from a home garage, Rhino Promotions has transformed into a full-scale one-stop-shop servicing clients Australia-wide.

The dynamic duo behind the award-winning business is George and Sarah Richmond.
Since they first established Rhino Promotions in 1999, the company has steadily grown to become a prominent and recognised brand operating in the heart of regional NSW.

“Our head office is now located in White Street, Dubbo, and our warehouse is strategically based with overnight access to the main regional and metropolitan centres including Canberra, Brisbane, Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne,’’ Mr Richmond said.

“We help clients promote themselves and all of the products we supply can be branded with a logo, name or message to promote their brand, club or image.

“We produce branded items using methods incorporating embroidery, screen printing; pad printing; die cut and laser engraving.

“The majority of the branding is done in-house. This effectively reduces traditional supply time between order and delivery.’’

Mr Richmond said the business was established when Sarah was having her first baby some 17 years ago.

“She wanted something she could do from home while we started our family,’’ he said. “So we bought our first printing machine and started producing branded pens and coffee cups.

“At that stage, Sarah was responsible for the design and artwork and I did the printing on weekends, as I had another full-time job.

“The next step was purchasing an embroidery machine as customers also required embroidery.’’

Mr Richmond said over time, the fledgling business grew into a full-time job for both husband and wife, with the purchase of more equipment and a staff of 11 staff to meet the ever increasing customer requests.

“In the end, we have expanded our product and service range to become the complete package for the customer - a one-stop-shop,’’ he said.

“We were very proud to move into out White Street warehouse three years ago – that was a big turning point for the business.

“From this location, we market a wide range of promotional items from clothing, headwear, shoes and bags through to traditional promotional items, pens and office items, and trophies .’’

The business also incorporates Totally Work Wear – providing a range of uniform and work wear needs – and it boasts the largest promotional printing and embroidery capacity onsite in the region.

Rhino Promotions is an award winning business. In October 2010, it won the Dubbo Chamber of Commerce’s coveted Gold Rhino, along with three Silver awards for Excellence in Products and Service, Excellence in Presentation & Marketing plus the award for Excellence in Customer Focus. In 2009 the business won the Silver award for Excellence in Business Development.

“We felt very proud of the recognition. It just goes to show that small beginnings can become an award winning business – we feel very privileged and humbled,’’ Mr Richmond said.

He said the Rhino Promotions team has continued to focus on providing quality, innovative ideas to promote the image of its customers - from government departments and corporate companies, to mining companies and small to medium enterprises located Australia-wide.

“We pride ourselves on our quality work, fast turnaround and personal service, and that’s been one of the keys to our success as a business,’’ Mr Richmond said.

“We have made investments over the years with infrastructure and software to support the delivery of promotional products and merchandise.

“Our order tracking software has been customised for our business and this enables us to maintain order delivery times, specifications and track communications and follow-up tasks.’’

Mr Richmond said Dubbo was an ideal place to start a new business.

“The rent here is cheap compared to the metropolitan centres, the cost of setting up a business is more affordable and the growth is here – Dubbo is a growing City,’’ he said.

“The City is also central to a very large service area and it is home to a range of decentralised government services.’’

With years of experience in business, Mr Richmond passes on the following advice to other business operators:

“Customer service, customer service, customer service! You may not be able to compete on price, but you can compete on customer service,’’ he advises.

“It’s not all about price – people do actually want service. They might start out talking about price, but in long-term if you continue to do right thing by them they’ll come back again and again.’’

Mr Richmond said his philosophy was to ‘work on the business, not in the business.’

“You need to develop your strategic direction and stay focussed on the bigger picture as it’s very easy to get bogged down in putting out bushfires all day,’’ he said.
